There are a lot of WordPress chatbot plugins, and they solve different problems. This guide compares nine of them on five plain criteria. One thing first: we make Talkwyn, a WordPress chatbot plugin, so we are not neutral. We list the tools in alphabetical order, explain our criteria, and tell you when another tool is the better pick.
Facts and prices checked October 2026. Verify on each vendor’s page before you decide.
How we compared these WordPress chatbot plugins
We looked at each tool through the eyes of a small business owner who wants a chatbot that answers real questions and brings in leads. These are the five criteria:
- Free plan. Can you run it for real, not just test it, without paying?
- Multilingual. Can it answer visitors in their own language?
- Lead capture. Can it collect contact details when a visitor is ready to buy or book?
- Price over 3 years. What does it cost over time, including the AI it uses?
- Ease of setup. How long until it answers questions from your own content?
- Runs on your own site
- Chats and leads stay in your WordPress database
- Runs on the vendor's servers
- Connects to WordPress with a script or plugin
- Chats are stored by the vendor
Two kinds of chatbot plugin
Before the list, it helps to know there are two main kinds of tools here.
- Plugins that run inside WordPress. You install them, connect an AI key, and they work from your site. You usually pay a one-time or yearly license, plus whatever your AI provider charges.
- Hosted services with a WordPress plugin or embed. The plugin, or a small script, connects your site to the vendor’s platform. Conversations are handled on their servers, and plans are usually billed monthly.
Neither kind is always better. Hosted services often include a full inbox for human agents. Plugins that run inside WordPress tend to keep your data on your own site and can cost less over several years.
The 9 WordPress chatbot plugins, A to Z
1. AI Engine
AI Engine is a broad AI toolkit for WordPress. The chatbot is one part of it, alongside tools for writing content, generating images, and building custom AI features. You connect it to AI providers with your own keys.
- Good for: site owners and developers who want many AI features in one plugin and like to tinker.
- Think about: with so many options, setting up a focused customer service chatbot can take longer than with a single-purpose tool.
2. AI Puffer
AI Puffer is an all-in-one AI plugin for WordPress that pairs a chatbot with content tools. Like AI Engine, it suits people who want one plugin for several AI jobs.
- Good for: bloggers and site owners who also want AI writing help.
- Think about: check how lead capture and multilingual answers work in the plan you choose.
3. Chatbase (embed)
Chatbase is a hosted AI agent builder. You train an agent on your content in their dashboard and add it to WordPress, or any other site, with an embed code. Conversations run on Chatbase’s platform.
- Good for: teams that run several kinds of websites, not only WordPress, and want one hosted dashboard.
- Think about: it is billed as a monthly service, so compare the 3-year total with a yearly license. Our Chatbase alternative comparison covers this in detail.
4. ContentReply AI
ContentReply AI is one of the newer AI chatbot plugins for WordPress. We could not confirm its current feature list and plans for this edition, so we are not making claims about it. Read its plugin page and test it on a staging site before you choose.
5. MxChat
MxChat is an AI chatbot plugin for WordPress that answers from your site’s content, with a free version and paid upgrades. It is aimed at site owners who want a dedicated chatbot rather than a full AI toolkit.
- Good for: people who want a focused AI chatbot inside WordPress.
- Think about: check which AI providers it supports and whether free AI keys will work for you.
6. PurioChat
PurioChat is another newer AI chatbot option for WordPress. As with ContentReply AI, we could not confirm its current features and pricing for this edition. Check its own page for multilingual support, lead capture, and how it is billed.
7. Talkwyn (our product)
Talkwyn is the plugin we build. It scans your published pages, posts, WooCommerce products, menus, custom fields, and Elementor content, then answers questions only from that content, with source links under each answer. When it does not know, it says so and offers to have your team follow up.
- Free plan: free forever, with site scan, multilingual answers, lead capture, chat history, and free AI providers (Groq, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Cloudflare Workers AI). Those providers set their own free limits.
- Multilingual: replies in the language each visitor writes in, including Spanish, French, Hindi and mixed messages. Arabic displays right to left.
- Lead capture: detects buying intent, asks before showing a short form, saves leads in WordPress, and emails them instantly.
- Price over 3 years: Pro is a yearly license. Business is $109 per year for 5 sites, plus any AI costs if you go past free tiers.
- Setup: install, paste a free AI key, click Scan my site, turn it on. Live in about five minutes.
Where it falls short today: Talkwyn is a new company. It is live on WordPress only; a Shopify app and a one-line embed for other sites are in development. It does not have a large human live chat inbox like hosted platforms do, and WhatsApp lead alerts are still in development. Slack and Telegram lead alerts are live in Pro.
8. Tidio (WordPress plugin)
Tidio is a hosted customer service platform with live chat and an AI agent. Its WordPress plugin connects your site to your Tidio account, and you handle conversations in Tidio’s app.
- Good for: businesses with a team that answers live chat every day and wants AI to help with common questions.
- Think about: it is billed monthly, and AI features may be priced separately. See our Tidio alternative comparison for a side-by-side.
9. WPBot
WPBot is a long-running chatbot plugin for WordPress. It is known for guided conversation flows, with options to add AI, and comes in a free version with paid upgrades and add-ons.
- Good for: sites that want scripted, button-based flows as well as AI answers.
- Think about: building flows takes time, and some features sit in paid add-ons. Check what you need is included.

Which is the best WordPress chatbot for you?
There is no single best WordPress chatbot plugin. Here is how we would choose, criterion by criterion. Remember that we make one of these tools.
- Best free WordPress chatbot that you can actually run: pick a plugin that works with free AI keys and keeps working when one provider is busy. Talkwyn is built for this, with automatic fallback between providers. MxChat, AI Engine, and WPBot also have free versions worth testing.
- Best for visitors who write in many languages: look for automatic language detection per message, and right-to-left support if you serve Arabic speakers. Talkwyn does this by default. Test any tool in your own languages.
- Best for lead capture: look for intent detection and a form that appears only when the visitor agrees. Hosted tools like Tidio are strong if a human team follows up in real time.
- Lowest cost over 3 years: add up 36 monthly bills for hosted tools and compare them with 3 yearly licenses plus any AI costs. Yearly licenses usually win for small sites, but do the math with today’s prices.
- Easiest setup: single-purpose chatbots that scan your site are fastest. Toolkits like AI Engine and AI Puffer give you more power but more settings.
- Best when you need more than WordPress today: Chatbase or Tidio, since Talkwyn’s embed for other sites is still in development.
How to work out the 3-year cost
Monthly prices look small, and yearly prices look big, so compare the same period.
- Open the vendor’s pricing page and find the plan that fits your traffic and the features you need.
- Multiply a monthly price by 36, or a yearly price by 3.
- Add AI costs. Plugins that use your own key may cost nothing extra on a free tier, but heavy use can need a paid AI plan.
- Add any add-ons you need, such as extra languages, seats, or integrations.
- Check what happens if you stop paying. With Talkwyn, if a license is not renewed, the plugin and its Pro features keep working; only updates and support stop.
How to test a WordPress chatbot before you commit
Whatever you choose, test it the same way. Install it on a staging site, scan your content, and ask 10 real customer questions, including a follow-up and one in another language. Check that each answer is correct, has a source, and that the tool admits when it does not know. Our step-by-step guide on how to add a free AI chatbot to WordPress includes a ready-made list of test questions.
Questions to ask any chatbot vendor
Before you pick from these WordPress chatbot plugins, get clear answers to these questions. A good vendor will answer them on its website or in a short email.
- Does it answer only from my content, or can it make things up? What happens when it does not know?
- Does it show source links, so visitors can check the answer?
- Which languages does it handle, and does it switch when the visitor switches?
- Where are chats and leads stored, and can I export them?
- Which AI providers can I use, and can I bring my own key?
- What happens if I stop paying? Does the chatbot stop, or fall back to a free version?
- Does it count staging sites against my site limit?
WordPress chatbot plugins FAQ
What is the best free WordPress chatbot?
It depends on what you need. For answers from your own content in many languages, with lead capture on free AI keys, try Talkwyn (our product). For many AI features in one plugin, try AI Engine. Test two or three on a staging site.
Are WordPress chatbot plugins free?
Many have free versions, but features and limits differ. AI answers also depend on an AI provider, which may have its own free tier and limits.
Do chatbot plugins slow down WordPress?
It varies. Look for a small script that loads after the page. Talkwyn’s chat script loads after the page and talks to your server only when someone sends a message.
Where are my chats stored?
Plugins that run inside WordPress usually keep chats in your database. Hosted services keep them on their own servers. Check each vendor’s privacy page.
Why did you not put Talkwyn first?
We make Talkwyn, so ranking ourselves first would not be fair. The list is alphabetical, and the criteria section tells you when another tool is a better fit.
How long does setup take?
About five minutes. Install Talkwyn, paste a free AI key, click Scan my site, pick your color, avatar and welcome message, and turn it on. The setup guide walks through each step.
How does the free trial work?
You get every Pro feature for 15 days on one site. No credit card needed. When the trial ends, upgrade with the same key or keep the free plan. Start the trial.
What happens when the answer is not on my site?
Talkwyn says it could not find that and offers to have your team follow up. It answers business questions only from your own content, so it never invents a price or a policy.
Do I need to pay for AI?
Not to get started. Groq, Google Gemini, OpenRouter and Cloudflare Workers AI offer free tiers. Add more than one and Talkwyn switches automatically when one hits its limit. Pro adds OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Mistral and DeepSeek. Choose an AI provider.
How do new leads reach me?
When a visitor shows interest, Talkwyn asks before it shows a short form inside the chat. Every lead is saved in WordPress and emailed to you instantly, and you can export leads as CSV. How lead capture works.
